What is ARTscape?
ARTscape is a powerful new intellectual tool that uses PEMs objects as a launching point for a users self-guided journey through art and culture. Data in ARTscape includes photos and descriptions of objects in PEMs collection, definitions, book excerpts, quotations, video clips, and audio clips.
Visitors interact with an intelligent, fluid, and customizable interface that suggests relationships between objects and ideas. An extensive keywording system applied to all content incorporates both concrete and abstract criteria, applying a fuzzy logic approach to suggesting connections between concepts.
Rather than generating a limited set of search results such as those typically made through static, linked databases, ARTscape becomes a unique entity in the hands of each individual user, revealing infinite pathways to unpredictable destinations.
ARTscape performance tips
ARTscape is a robust tool that may challenge the performance of some computers. The following tips may help increase responsiveness, movie playback speeds, and animation smoothness:
The Macromedia Flash Player 6 is required to view ARTscape. To download the Flash Player, please visit Macromedia.
You should minimize the number of applications running and the number of browser windows open while ARTscape is active. If the computer is busy running another application or displaying the contents of a different Web site, this can undermine performance of ARTscape.
Macintosh users may benefit from allocating more memory to their browser:
- Locate the browser application file on the hard disk.
- Click once on the application icon to highlight it.
- From the File menu choose Get InfoMemory.
- Under Memory Requirements change the Preferred size to at least 48000k.
